When the British Society for the History of Pharmacy was founded in 1967 its new committee agreed to sponsor two publications; a bulletin, Pharmaceutical Historian, which would carry news of a general character, items of information and short articles; and a more scholarly publication containing original research articles. The first number of volume 1 of the latter appeared in 1970, under the title Transactions of the British Society for the History of Pharmacy.
Transactions would be an occasional publication “subject to the receipt of suitable contributions.” A second number appeared in 1971, a third 3 followed 3 years later in 1974, and a fourth (the last one) appeared in 1977. Each of the Transactions contained one or two scholarly and quite lengthy papers, but ultimately this proved rather too ambitious. Transactions was discontinued in 1977 and both the scholarly papers and the short articles were subsequently published together in Pharmaceutical Historian.
The four numbers of Transactions of the
British Society for the History of Pharmacy
have now been digitized, and the articles are available online on an
open access basis. The work was kindly undertaken by the Technical
University of Brauschweig (Technische Universität Braunschweig) in
Germany , and the articles are being hosted on the University of
Brauschweig server.
